Our <a href=\"http:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/aphasia\/\">recent blog on Aphasia<\/a> explains what occurs and how to deal with it effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lack of Oxygen<\/strong> \u2013 water accidents, choking, or anything that reduces the amount of oxygen flowing through the body can result in loss of speech and\/or brain damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Neurological Disorders<\/strong> \u2013 Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer\u2019s, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/speech\/disorders\/HuntingtonsDisease.htm#what\">Huntington Disease<\/a>, are common neurological problems that can cause difficulties with speech.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dysarthria<\/strong> \u2013 is the weakness of muscles typically used to speak. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/dysarthria\/basics\/definition\/con-20035008\">Dysarthria<\/a> can cause both weakness in the muscles used for speech and\/or inability to control the muscles needed to speak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Speech Language Pathology Can Help You<\/h2>\n<p>The inability to speak can affect a person\u2019s quality of life greatly. Regular visits from a SLP can produce positive results. After evaluating to determine your specific needs, a SLP can then help with:<\/p>\n<h3>Language Disorders<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Receptive Language<\/strong> \u2013 difficulty understanding and processing what others are saying.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pragmatic Language<\/strong> \u2013 speaking socially; impairment in understanding how to communicate within a group or social manner.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expressive Language<\/strong> \u2013 having difficulties utilizing language to get your thoughts across to others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Speech Disorders<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Fluency<\/strong> \u2013 it is important to be able to speak fluently without stuttering or placing words such as \u201clike, uh &amp; um,\u201d into your sentences. Problems with fluency often come from being unable to find the word you need or want to use while speaking; common with neurological disorders.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Voice Strength<\/strong> \u2013 your voice may be rough, hoarse and unclear. It\u2019s important that your voice is strong and clear; often requiring voice strengthening exercises (much like professional singers).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Articulation<\/strong> \u2013 saying words clearly and articulating certain sounds are important. Pronouncing words so that they are distinct and pronounced properly helps others understand us better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phonetics<\/strong> \u2013 working with the patterns of speech we use, including how we speak, can include voice fluctuation and dialect. Phonology is closely associated with articulation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apraxia<\/strong> \u2013 is a speech motor skill disorder.
