{"id":3001,"date":"2016-04-08T10:00:45","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T10:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/?p=3001"},"modified":"2016-04-08T10:00:45","modified_gmt":"2016-04-08T10:00:45","slug":"good-carbs-bad-carbs-do-you-know-the-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/08\/good-carbs-bad-carbs-do-you-know-the-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Carbs, Bad Carbs\u2013Do You Know the Difference?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, you should get at least 50% of your daily carbohydrate intake from whole grains.<sup>1<\/sup> A whole grain consists of a grain that includes the bran, germ and endosperm (the whole grain).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Refined grains have been processed and stripped of the bran and the germ.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Examples of whole grains verses refined grains are listed below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whole grain carbs:<\/strong><sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brown rice<\/li>\n<li>Oats<\/li>\n<li>Quinoa<\/li>\n<li>Whole wheat<\/li>\n<li>Farro<\/li>\n<li>Spelt<\/li>\n<li>Corn<\/li>\n<li>Rye<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Refined grain carbs:<\/strong><sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cookies<\/li>\n<li>Cake<\/li>\n<li>Refined\/enriched cereals<\/li>\n<li>Bagels<\/li>\n<li>White bread<\/li>\n<li>White rolls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, protein and carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram, whereas alcohol has 7 calories per gram. Fats contain 9 calories per gram. It is recommended that on a 2,000 calorie daily intake, 6 ounces should be from grains.\u00a0 That breaks down to 3 ounces or less from refined grains.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Whole grains are a form of complex carbohydrates and refined grains are made up of processed simple carbohydrates.\u00a0 Simple carbohydrates are digested into the body faster and generally have less nutritional value.
