{"id":3213,"date":"2016-08-26T10:00:32","date_gmt":"2016-08-26T10:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/?p=3213"},"modified":"2016-08-26T10:00:32","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T10:00:32","slug":"food-for-the-soul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/26\/food-for-the-soul\/","title":{"rendered":"Food for the Soul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A healthy diet and regular exercise are extremely important for good health, preventing disease and living longer, but there are other things in life that are even more important for health and longevity.<\/p>\n<p>In training as a holistic health coach, I learned that there are two types of food, primary food and secondary food, and it\u2019s the primary food that plays a more critical role in the quality of your life than the secondary food (the food you eat).\u00a0 So, what is primary food?\u00a0 I refer to it as \u201csoul food.\u201d. It\u2019s the things in life that feed our heart and soul, like healthy relationships, enjoyable physical activity, a fulfilling \/satisfying career, and a meaningful spiritual practice. \u00a0These things can satisfy our deepest hunger, a hunger for a happy and fulfilling life. \u00a0When primary food is balanced and satisfying, <u>your life feeds you<\/u>, making what you put in your mouth secondary.<\/p>\n<p>If we do not have a good balance of primary food to help us feel that our lives are worthwhile and enjoyable, then we will use secondary food to try and satisfy the \u201chunger\u201d that only primary food can fulfill.\u00a0 We often stuff ourselves with secondary food when we\u2019re really starving for primary food. This can lead to weight gain, frustration, guilt, low self-esteem, depression, or more serious health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.\u00a0 All the food in the world will not satisfy your hunger for the primary food that is missing in your life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips for better balance with primary foods: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> <strong>Relationships <\/strong>\u2013 love nourishes the body, mind and spirit.\u00a0 Think about your social needs on a scale of 1 to 10 to determine the right balance of togetherness and aloneness that is right for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Physical Activity <\/strong>\u2013 find types of physical activity that you enjoy most and add them into your life.\u00a0 Different forms of exercise and activity will give you different types of energy.\u00a0 Listen to your body to find what works best for you, then put together a mix of activities to keep yourself in balance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Career<\/strong> &#8211; work is a huge part of our daily routine, yet how many people really enjoy what they do?\u00a0 Our lives would greatly improve if we were doing work we loved.\u00a0 Think about what you like and dislike about the work you do each day.\u00a0 If it isn\u2019t satisfying or enjoyable, then it might be time to start considering a different type of work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Spirituality<\/strong> \u2013 our spiritual practices can feed us on a very deep level, so whether it\u2019s daily meditation, prayer, reading inspirational books, walking in nature\u2026commit to spending time each day to develop your spirituality, adding more depth, more meaning, and more joy to your life.<\/p>\n<p>Adding more years to your life is not what\u2019s most important, it\u2019s really about adding more LIFE to your years, so be sure you\u2019re getting a good balance of <strong>\u201cfood for the soul\u201d<\/strong> EVERYDAY for a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3214 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Susan-Kimmel-150x150.png\" alt=\"Susan Kimmel, Holistic Health Practitioner, Toxic-Free Living Specialist, Live Your Life Physical Therapy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Susan-Kimmel-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Susan-Kimmel-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Susan-Kimmel-80x80.png 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Susan Kimmel, H.C. is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, Toxic-Free Living Specialist.
