Also, that lack of sleep can be incredibly harmful to the body and decrease one\u2019s quality of life? Everyone knows that diet and exercise are critical for a healthy lifestyle, but\u00a0sleep is just as important &#8211; or even more so.<\/p>\n<p>Lack of sleep\u00a0affects\u00a0nearly every organ in the body and has been associated with many health risks. Sleep is\u00a0necessary\u00a0because it is the time our bodies use to physically and mentally repair\u00a0themselves.\u00a0Depriving our bodies of sleep affects the ability to maintain a healthy weight, can influence thoughts and actions, and negatively impacts cardiovascular health and overall\u00a0wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Here are some suggestions to improve overall sleep:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Eat well and exercise regularly<\/strong>\u2013 Eating properly and getting plenty of exercise keeps our weight in check,\u00a0and\u00a0it also helps with improving sleep. Avoid eating foods high in carbohydrates;\u00a0as carbs flood the muscles with glucose, causing involuntary muscle movements during sleep. If you are a night time snacker, try a\u00a0handful\u00a0of nuts.<br \/>\nNuts provide\u00a0healthy fats and protein, which are satisfying and digest slowly. Nuts are also rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps to calm the nervous system. Don\u2019t exercise too close to bedtime as this increases body temperature, ramps up your metabolism, and can make it difficult to fall asleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Just say no to caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and electronics<\/strong>\u2013 All of these can make going to sleep difficult. Avoid bright light at least an hour before going to bed.\u00a0Remove\u00a0all electronics, TVs, computers, and other electronic devices from your bedroom. The bright lights emanating from them disrupts your body\u2019s ability to naturally produce melatonin,\u00a0a natural hormone that regulates sleep.\u00a0Darkness will help your body begin producing\u00a0the melatonin it needs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set Your Schedule<\/strong>\u2013 Try to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. Creating a schedule helps regulate your body\u2019s internal clock and may help you sleep better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep it Cool<\/strong>\u2013 Make sure your bedroom is a relaxing environment.\u00a0 Your bed and pillows should be comfortable and supportive. If not, it may be time for new bedding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shift Gears<\/strong>\u2013 Your body needs time to shift into sleep\u00a0mode. The\u00a0last hour prior to going to bed should be spent doing a calming activity,\u00a0such as reading or taking a warm bath.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use Essential Oils\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 There are many essential\u00a0oils\u00a0that have well-known relaxing properties. When diffused aromatically in the bedroom,\u00a0they\u00a0can create a calming and peaceful environment.
