{"id":5230,"date":"2021-02-26T00:11:23","date_gmt":"2021-02-26T00:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/?p=5230"},"modified":"2021-02-26T00:11:23","modified_gmt":"2021-02-26T00:11:23","slug":"is-drinking-alcohol-good-for-your-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/2021\/02\/26\/is-drinking-alcohol-good-for-your-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Drinking Alcohol Good for Your Heart?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic, stress levels among Americans\nhave been high since restaurants and clubs have limited hours, family and\nfriend gatherings have been minimal and small, and working from home has become\nthe new normal. Not only does this stress alone negatively affect the heart as\nseen in our previous<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/2021\/02\/05\/take-a-load-off-your-heart-how-stress-can-hurt-your-health\/\">\nblog<\/a>, but the coping mechanisms that Americans are using are turning into\nlong term effects, not just short term stress-relievers. Since COVID-19\npandemic started, alcohol sales in the US have gone up by 54% and online\nalcohol sales have increased 252%.<sup>1 <\/sup>While it may be easier to knock\nback an extra couple glasses of wine, this seemingly harmless addition to your\nlife may affect you down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is considered a \u201cdrink\u201d and how much is too much? &nbsp;The recommended alcohol intake per day is one\ndrink for women and one or two for men. Twelve ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine\nor 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits is considered one drink.<sup>2<\/sup> This may\nnot seem like a lot to many people, considering restaurants disguise the taste\nof booze with fruity cocktails, and you may have an oversized glass at home.\nAccording to the CDC, binge drinking is considered 4 or more drinks for women,\nand 5 for men. Heavy drinking is considered 8 or more drinks per week for women\nand 15 or more drinks per week for men. It is estimated that about 1 in 6\nAmericans binge drink at least once a week.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the astounding rise in alcohol sales this past year, we\nmay be seeing a rise in unhealthy hearts. This is because anything more than\nthe daily recommendation increases your risk of elevated cholesterol levels,\narrhythmias, high blood pressure, and weakening of the heart. All these lead to\nheart disease and therefore, greatly increase your risk for a heart attack.<sup>4<\/sup>\nNot only that, but alcohol is considered \u201cempty calories,\u201d and are ultimately\nbroken down into sugar. This can lead to weight gain and higher chance to\ndevelop type II diabetes, which are both risk factors for heart disease. In\naddition, what is commonly seen with excessive alcohol intake is often mindless\nlate-night snacking, dehydration, and hangovers that lead to lack of physical\nactivity and increase intake of processed, high calorie foods.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the negative effects of alcohol, it may seem easy to\nstop or limit consumption. However, with the pressures of going out with\nfriends, celebratory party invitations or the need to relieve stress, we all\nknow it is not that simple. Consider using some of these tactics to avoid binge\ndrinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Control your environment<\/strong>. Know what\nplaces and which groups of people tend to lead you to binge drinking. Place a curfew\nfor yourself or suggest doing an activity that does not involve the pressures\nof alcohol.<\/li><li><strong>Weigh your options<\/strong>. Think about the pros\nand cons of consuming alcohol. With the above information in mind, having a night\nof \u201cfun\u201d may not be the best choice for your future health.<\/li><li><strong>Create a support system<\/strong>. Find people who\nare your biggest cheerleaders and will help you achieve your goals. Surround\nyourself with people who make it easy to avoid alcohol.<\/li><li><strong>Consider giving up alcohol.<\/strong> While\neverything in moderation is a standard, look at your habits and tendencies. If\nyou feel like you may lose control once you start, think about avoiding alcohol\naltogether.<sup>5<\/sup><\/li><li><strong>Replace alcohol with a good habit.<\/strong> If you\nfind yourself reaching for alcohol often, replace those occasions with a good\nhabit. Get lost in a book or do an activity with your friends such as mini\ngolf. Take a cooking class to try a new recipe or pick-up kickboxing.
