{"id":5263,"date":"2021-04-02T21:08:23","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T21:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/?p=5263"},"modified":"2021-04-02T21:08:23","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T21:08:23","slug":"what-foods-can-help-manage-your-ibs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/02\/what-foods-can-help-manage-your-ibs\/","title":{"rendered":"What Foods Can Help Manage IBS?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common disease diagnosed by gastroenterologists, and one of the most common disorders seen by primary care physicians. \u00b9 While it is commonly diagnosed, unfortunately, it is not commonly understood.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IBS is a complex syndrome with many underlying factors.&nbsp; Research shows us that lifestyle changes have\nthe greatest impact on IBS symptoms.&nbsp; Here\nare a few great places to start.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#1. Increase your Sunshine Vitamin: <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent studies have shown that there is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in those diagnosed with IBS and that those with the lowest Vitamin D levels report the highest severity of symptoms.\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin D while crucial to the body must be obtained by the sun, supplement, or food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What should you do next<\/em><\/strong><strong>?&nbsp; <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Start by asking your MD to check your Vitamin D levels.\u00a0 This is a simple test.\u00a0 <\/li><li>Talk with your doctor or dietitian about the proper amount of Vitamin D3 to be taking.\u00a0 <\/li><li>Increase your intake of Vitamin D:\u00a0 When sunshine is not available, some foods you can start to add to your diet now are fatty fish such as salmon, cod liver oil, egg yolks, or fortified foods such as cereals or orange juice.\u00a0 <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#2. Know that your symptoms are not\nin your head\u2026. but there is a connection! <\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common recommendation for those with IBS is to try Yoga or meditation- things that can calm the mind.\u00a0 This is because we know that there is a connection between stress and symptoms.\u00a0 Serotonin, or the \u201chappy\u201d hormone, is often talked about in its role in depression and anxiety, but 95% of our serotonin is found in your gut.\u00a0 Serotonin influences your mood and your gut\u2019s activity. So, while it can become a \u201cwhich came first- the chicken or the egg\u201d scenario, what we do know, is that if your gut is not working well, your mind likely is not either. \u00b3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Foods that help\nboost serotonin: Salmon, eggs, spinach, and seeds.&nbsp; <em>Bonus- a few of <\/em>these provide both\nvitamin<em> D and serotonin<\/em>! <\/li><li>Vitamin B6 is a\nprecursor of serotonin, so make sure you are getting enough of that important\nvitamin found in pork, poultry, and oats. <\/li><li>Some probiotics\ncan help restore and maintain proper gut serotonin levels.&nbsp; Talk to your dietitian about which probiotic\nis right for you. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#3: Eliminate\nyour trigger foods:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sounds obvious, however to many it also sounds overwhelming and often gets skipped.\u00a0 With up to 89% of those living with IBS reporting their symptoms are triggered by food, this is the most important aspect in gaining control over IBS symptoms.<sup>4<\/sup> A common dietary approach to treat IBS is known as the FODMAPS diet.<sup>5<\/sup> FODMAPS is an elimination diet, focused on removing short-chain carbohydrates that tend to be poorly digested.\u00a0 While this diet can be extreme, not everyone needs to follow the diet 100% to see results.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonly reported trigger foods are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Gluten<\/li><li>Dairy<\/li><li>Caffeine<\/li><li>Fried foods<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One cannot simply focus on what needs to\nbe cut out without asking what should be added.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gut Healing Foods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bone Broth<\/li><li>Sauerkraut (tip- don\u2019t like the taste?
