{"id":5553,"date":"2021-12-31T21:03:46","date_gmt":"2021-12-31T21:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/?p=5553"},"modified":"2021-12-31T21:03:46","modified_gmt":"2021-12-31T21:03:46","slug":"making-the-most-of-new-years-resolutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/2021\/12\/31\/making-the-most-of-new-years-resolutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Making The Most of New Year\u2019s Resolutions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New Year\u2019s Resolutions, easy to make, unfortunately also easy to break.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A top reason why most people give up on their resolutions, is that they are treating what should be a marathon, like a sprint.\u00a0 Here are a few simple steps to make 2022 the year your resolutions become just a way of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First, set small, realistic goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resolutions are set with good intentions- and while the enthusiasm for better health is inspiring, with over 80% of us dropping our resolutions by mid-February<sup>1<\/sup>, we need to remember that slow and steady really does win the race. Small goals are better than failed goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what do successful goals look like?&nbsp; They are small and measurable.&nbsp; Let\u2019s look at some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<strong>-Failed Resolution<\/strong>: I want to lose 25lbs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0&#8211;<strong><em>Realistic Resolution:<\/em><\/strong> I will lose 5lbs by the end of February<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>-Failed Resolution:<\/strong> I am going to start a new diet New Years Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> &#8211;<strong><em>Realistic Resolution:<\/em><\/strong> I will add a vegetable to every dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>-Failed Resolution:<\/strong> I will drink 60oz of water every day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>-Realistic Resolution<\/em><\/strong>: I will fill a water bottle in the AM, and I will finish it by the end of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focus on the positive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to making changes to our diet, it can be easy to feel deprived, which is never a recipe for success.\u00a0 Rather than focusing on cutting out \u201cbad\u201d foods, instead focus on the positive like: \u201cI feel better when I eat better,\u201d or \u201cMy skin is better when I drink more water.\u201d\u00a0 This simple shift in focus helps us stick to our goals, and more importantly, helps us feel less deprived.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And finally, add in some accountability<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in most cases, we are stronger together.&nbsp; Studies show that those who have accountability, are more than twice as likely to achieve success, so don\u2019t keep that resolution a secret.<sup>2<\/sup> Tell a partner, a friend, or join an online support group.&nbsp; Not only will your accountability partner keep you focused on your goals, but they will also be there for validation when you achieve your goals, and validation is a powerful force that gives us fuel to keep on going.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So go ahead- set those goals, but don\u2019t keep them to yourself.&nbsp; And remember to never underestimate the power of small, consistent changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5554\" width=\"217\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-9.png 341w, https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-9-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-9-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-9-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/liveyourlifept.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-9-80x80.png 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Johnson MS, RD is a Registered Dietitian with a strong passion for helping people discover the healing power of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s world offers more nutrition information at our fingertips than ever before.
