So let’s discuss diabetes…

Diabetes affects your bodies ability to create and tolerate insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that your body creates in order to break down sugars, other forms of carbohydrates, starches, and such into energy. If left untreated diabetes can have disasterous consequences including an amputation and death. However, with a proactive approach to any type of diabetes you can generally live a long and healthy life.

There 3 basic types of diabetes:

  • Type I – generally this is the type of diabetes that is most often diagnosed in children and young adults. According to the American Diabetes Association less than 5% of those diagnosed with diabetes are diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. There is nothing that you can do to prevent Type I Diabetes; however, there is plenty you can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle & reduce risks associated with this type of diabetes. Live Your Life PT can help you determine what your needs may be to stay healthy by utilizing a physical therapist.
  • Type II – this type of diabetes is the the most common type of diabetes. In Type II Diabetes your body cannot utilize the insulin it creates properly; thereby allowing your sugar levels to rise. Many people have something called “Insulin Resistance”  before they are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. A sign of insulin resistance is when you begin to notice a darkened skin area around the neck, elbows, and joint areas. This darkness can be the first sign that you are “insulin intolerant” and you are then at a higer risk of gettig Type II Diabetes. There is generally an unhealthy lifestyle that is associated with Type II Diabetes. Type II Diabetes can be deterred and sometimes even reversed if caught in time. Taking aproactive approach can lead to a healthier life. Live Your Life PT can help you regain control of your life if you are pre-diabetic or diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. We will work with you one-on-one to create a customized wellness program.
  • Gestational Diabetes – this type of diabetes is exactly as it sounds; a form of diabetes that can occur during a woman’s pregnancy around the 24th week of gestation. Most of the time gestational diabetes will go away upon the birth of the child; however, your chances of being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes later in life is higher if you’ve had gestational diabetes. With gestational diabetes your doctor and obstetrician will monitor you and your baby very closely. It is important to listen to what they tell you in order to have a healthy & worry free pregnancy and birth.

Diabetes Prevention and Care

As mentioned with Type II Diabetes you can take precautions to prevent and overcome this type. Prevention is not as hard as you think and simply requires a healthier lifestyle on your part. To prevent Type II Diabetes you will want to:

  1. Maintain a healthy diet
  2. Exercise regularly
  3. Manage your stress

Live Your Life Physical Therapy offers education on stress management and a proper diabetic diet, as well as  a safe, progressive exercise program that enables your body to become more sensitive to insulin and effectively remove extra glucose from your bloodstream. The best part is that this program will be designed completely around you and your needs and abilities.

If you have been diagnosed with either Type I or Type II Diabetes we can help you achieve the level of health you want.

The Effects of Diabetes

Diabetes can affect every organ in your body. It can cause high blood pressure and increase your risk of strokes & heart attacks. Those who have diabetes are at risk of losing limbs due to the reduced blood flow. Kidney failure is quite common with those who suffer from the disease; along with blindness & vision issues. Diabetes also increases your risk for certain cancers according to the American Diabetes Association.

Once again the factors of reducing your chances of getting Type II Diabetes are the same factors in reducing the effects of diabetes. One added factor that can play a part in reducing the effects of the disease is to quit smoking. Smoking can only add to an unhealty lifestyle; which in turn leads to increasing your risk of many diseases, including diabetes.
