I’d like to welcome our Guest Blogger, Jill Thomas. Jill is writing today’s blog for Psoriasis Awareness Month. Jill Thomas is a consultant for Rodan and Fields Dermatology.
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects nearly 7.5 million Americans. Out of those, approximately 10%-30% of Americans will develop psoriatic arthritis; a painful form of arthritis in which the body’s own system attacks the joints and tendons. The pain will generally be accompanied with psoriasis of the skin; appearing as red, inflamed, scaly patches that itch, crack, and often bleed. The skin cells in psoriatic plaques mature rapidly and instead of falling off, the skin cells accumulate and form red, flaky skin patches.
Many may recall when famous PGA golfer Phil Mickelson brought Psoriatic Arthritis (PA) into the limelight after he announced that he was diagnosed with it and was being treated in hopes that he could fully return to his lifelong dream as a professional golfer. His pain was so intense that he actually pleaded his case to the PGA itself in order to have the ability to utilize a golf cart during play because he had trouble walking the entire course. While he was denied the request it caused quite a stir and raised many questions about those with disabilities being given special treatment in order to compete on a level playing field without facing extensive pain that could impair their game. Today, he once again competes without special treatment or conditions and has even won many titles; showing that with the proper physical exercise and treatments you can have a positive outcome giving you a fairly normal life. This is especially true if you seek treatment as soon as possible and don’t put it off.
While there is no known cure for psoriasis there are many treatments including phototherapy, diet modifications, supplements, oral medications, topical treatments and in extreme cases, injectable medications. Since your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes is increased when you have psoriasis, physical activity is important for your overall health.
Researchers believe for a person to develop psoriasis, the individual must have a combination the genes that cause
psoriasis and be exposed to specific external factors known as “triggers.”
To address possible biological and environmental triggers associated with psoriasis a topical treatment option is often highly effective. The Soothe Regimen created by Rodan and Fields Dermatology has shown excellent results. This 4-product regimen helps to fortify and protect the skin’s moisture barrier against irritating environmental and biological aggressors; thereby allowing the skin to keep moisture in and irritants out. Protecting the skin’s moisture barrier improves resiliency and makes the skin less prone to irritation. See the testimonial to the right which shows how The Soothe Regimen helped one client; with shots from day 1, day 60 and then at 4 months!
Many times clients will choose a multi-level approach to psoriasis treatment; including exercise and medical/topical products. Live Your Life Physical Therapy and The Soothe Regimen can be combined together to battle psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; combining a healthy lifestyle and topical treatment regimen to combat your psoriasis and even possibly deter its progress. Consult your physician to determine what approach would be best for you.
