Do I Want My Provider Down There? What to Expect From a Virtual Pelvic Floor Exam

| Live Your Life PT

If you have been referred to pelvic floor physical therapy, you might be wondering, “Wait, physical therapy for where?” After all, this is a body part that does not usually get much attention. However, the pelvic floor may deserve much more care than you would think.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is about restoring function and reducing pain in an area that plays a huge role in your quality of life. The pelvic floor muscles affect bladder and bowel control, sexual health, core stability, and even back and hip pain. However, this can still be a stress-inducing medical appointment for many. Knowing what to expect from your appointment decreases stress and allows you to focus on this crucial body part.

Why Physical Therapists Assess the Pelvic Floor

As physical therapists, our job is to assess muscle function and movement patterns. The pelvic floor is no different. If these muscles are too tight, too weak, uncoordinated, or in spasm, they can cause symptoms like:

  • Urinary leakage
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pressure or heaviness (prolapse)
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Constipation
  • Low back, hip, or tailbone pain

What to Expect During Your Pelvic PT Evaluation

1. A Full Conversation

First and foremost, we talk. You stay fully dressed while we discuss your symptoms, medical history, and personal goals. This is the time for us to learn about you and your needs, so you can share as much or as little as you are comfortable with. We will also explain what the exam entails and you can opt in or out at any time.

2. External Movement Assessment

We look at posture, breathing, hip mobility, and core strength. Often, pelvic floor issues are connected to how you move, stand, or breathe. Expect some basic comfortable movement tests like squats and breathing.

3. Pelvic Floor Muscle Assessment

Our virtual appointments require NO undressing. The assessment focuses on:

  • Guided functional movement review
  • Visual posture and movement observation
  • Education on anatomy through models or diagrams
  • Instruction in breath control and motor strategies

This part is done slowly, respectfully, and always within your comfort level. You are in control of the session, and we can pause or stop at any time. If your exam suggests the need for hands-on assessment, we will facilitate a referral to an in-person provider.

Why It Is Worth It

So many people suffer in silence with pelvic health issues and convince themselves it is just something they have to live with. However, this could not be further from the truth. Whether it is leaking, pelvic heaviness, or painful intimacy, pelvic physical therapy can help you feel better, stronger, and more in control of your body.

You Are Always in Control

At every step of the process, your consent comes first. As physical therapists, we are here to partner with you and to listen, to educate, and to help you reach your goals without pressure or judgment. If you are nervous, that is okay. We will talk through everything and make sure you feel safe and empowered.
