Halloween Safety for Older Adults

| Live Your Life PT

Halloween is a fun and festive time, but it can also present unique safety challenges for older adults. From dark walkways to surprise decorations, the evening’s excitement can sometimes bring added risks. In fact, Halloween night sees a significant increase in preventable fall-related injuries.1 With a little planning, older adults and their families can enjoy the holiday with confidence and peace of mind.

1. Light the Way

Poor visibility is one of the biggest hazards on Halloween night. Here are some steps you can take to ensure safety:

  • Keep entryways, driveways, and walkways well-lit to prevent trips and falls.
  • Use LED candles instead of real flames in pumpkins for better, consistent visibility.
  • Place motion-sensor lights near stairs or porches for light while conserving energy.
  • Bring a flashlight when trick-or-treating for ill-lit sidewalks.

2. Prevent Trips and Falls

Trick-or-treat traffic can make walkways crowded, while seasonal decorations may add hidden obstacles. Take these extra precautions to make it safe for your trick-or-treaters.

  • Remove cords, pumpkins, or décor from areas where people walk.
  • Keep pathways clear of leaves, which can become slippery.
  • If handing out candy, use a sturdy chair and place the bowl within easy reach to avoid unnecessary bending or twisting.

3 . Choose Costumes Carefully

If dressing up, make sure costumes are safe and comfortable. Here are some costume safety tips:

  • Avoid long robes, capes, or trailing fabrics that may cause tripping.
  • Wear secure shoes with good support and non-slip soles or good tread.
  • Opt for lightweight accessories that don’t limit movement or visibility.
  • If you use a walker or a cane, make sure you can easily access it while in your costume.

4. Plan for a Calm Evening

Halloween can bring noise, flashing lights, and lots of commotion. If you or a loved one is sensitive to sounds or light, try these tips:

  • If sensitive to noise, keep windows closed and play calming music indoors.
  • Ask a loved one beforehand to check in throughout the night to make sure you are okay.
  • If you are invited to a party, let the hosts know you may need to step out or leave early.
  • If you prefer not to participate, simply turn off the porch light as a signal to trick-or-treaters.

Enjoy Halloween with Confidence!

Halloween should be fun and stress-free. Whether you are greeting trick-or-treaters, spending time with family, or just enjoying the decorations, a little preparation goes a long way toward making the night safe and enjoyable.
