5 Ways to Improve Your Social Well-being

| Live Your Life PT

In 2020, the National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reported that nearly a quarter of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.1 Older adults are more susceptible to this issue due to the loss of family or friends and health impairments. Social isolation increases the risk of death from all causes and increases the risk of dementia.1 That said, it is crucial to treat your social health as well as your physical health. Here are five ways you can decrease your risk of isolation as well as some resources for Twin City residents:

Take classes – It is never too late for an old dog to learn new tricks. Many libraries and city halls offer a variety of classes for all ages ranging from arts and crafts to water activities and even learning how to navigate Medicare!. These classes offer a great outlet for you to connect with others who have similar interests. The class material can serve as a conversation starter to help you engage with your classmates.

Stay active – Much like classes, some cities offer exercise classes in parks or other public spaces. The great thing about these is you do not even have to sign up! Just join the crowd and have fun. From Tai Chi to Zumba, there are various activities to stay active and meet new people in your neighborhood. If you are wanting a more involved sports activity, you can even join your local league and meet new teammates!

VolunteerGive back to your community with your time and skill set while meeting new people. Whether you’re working alongside fellow volunteers or engaging with those you assist, each interaction presents a chance to forge meaningful friendships and strengthen your social network, enriching both your life and theirs in the process.

Host a gathering – Bring the party to you! Rather than leaving your home, you can invite others over for tea or a barbeque. Nothing brings people together quite like good food, so take the chance to invite a few neighbors over for a quick bite. Chances are, they will invite you over the next time they have a gathering too!

Technology – Take advantage of modern technology to connect with family, friends, and potential new acquaintances. Many libraries offer technology assistance so you do not have to start this journey alone. Opportunities to improve your social well-being are literally at your fingertips.

Human connections provide significant health benefits. Explore one of these options or try them all to find what resonates with you. Remember to prioritize safety when meeting new people, but don’t hesitate to extend your hand for a handshake.
