Don’t Fall This Fall

| Live Your Life PT

As the leaves begin to change and the air gets crisp, fall is a season filled with beauty, but it also comes with increased fall risks, especially for older adults. While not all falls lead to serious injury, they still can result in fractures, loss of independence, and a decline in overall health and confidence. Thankfully, falls are not an inevitable part of aging. With a few proactive steps, you can enjoy everything autumn has to offer without taking a tumble.

1. Clear the Path

Outside, fallen leaves and early frost can be reasons you fall. Inside, throw rugs, poor lighting, and cluttered hallways are tripping hazards. Minimize your fall risk by making sure to:

  • Sweep up leaves regularly, especially if they are wet
  • Keep pathways well-lit and clear
  • Secure loose rugs

2. Stay Active to Stay Steady

Regular physical activity helps improve balance, strength, coordination, and flexibility. These are key to preventing falls. Classes like Tai Chi are excellent for boosting your balance. You can even find online videos that will walk you through the steps. Physical therapists can provide you with an even more individualized plan to target areas that would best improve your balance.

3. Check Your Vision and Hearing

Your eyes and ears play a big role in your balance. Reduced depth perception or inner ear issues can increase your risk of falling. Schedule an annual vision exam if you have not done so already, and make sure your glasses prescription is up to date. Make sure to also visit your primary care provider regularly and report any feelings of ear fullness or dizziness.

4. Review Your Medications

Some medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or low blood pressure, all of which raise fall risk. Talk to your provider or pharmacist about:

  • Potential side effects
  • Drug interactions
  • The possibility of reducing or adjusting dosages if needed

5. Make Your Home Fall-Safe

Environmental adjustments can make a big difference. Safety upgrades include:

  • Installing grab bars in the bathroom
  • Adding railings to both sides of the stairs
  • Using night lights in bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Keeping frequently used items within easy reach

6. Don’t Do It Alone

If you are worried about your balance or have had a fall before, do not put off being proactive about preventing another fall. Find a physical therapist service that can support your journey, tailoring an exercise routine to keep you upright and evaluate your home to identify tripping hazards.

By taking a few intentional steps, you can enjoy the season with confidence and peace of mind. Whether planning to hike a trail, rake leaves, or just move around your home, you deserve to feel safe and steady, and Live Your Life FALL FREE!
